Framing Perceptions of Justice in a Public Goods Dilemma

چکیده

In a social dilemma, group members have equal access to collective resources, but each must decide between acting in self-interested or collectively interested ways when considering their contribution the group. Our research focused on how perceived fairness of contributions and outcomes affects these decisions. We report an experiment that manipulated two factors related fairness: dilemma-framing emphasized either individual gains, whether partner’s relative was high, low, subject’s. Also, subjects’ value orientations—individualist vs. prosocial—were balanced across conditions. Subjects made rounds decisions received feedback after each. As hypothesized for first-round contributions, prosocials contributed more public goods framing had no discernable effect. second round, neither orientation nor influenced participants’ evaluations partners low initial group, affected partner high Importantly, results generally supported key hypotheses attempts rectify injustices via subsequent bonus sharing. Partner’s orientation, all redistributive behaviors.

Public goods dilemma in asexual ant societies.

Cooperation in biological, social, and economic groups is underpinned by public goods that are generated by group members at some personal cost. Theory predicts that public goods will be exploited by cheaters who benefit from the goods by not paying for them, thereby leading to the collapse of cooperation. This situation, described as the "public goods dilemma" in game theory, makes the ubiquit...

A general model of the public goods dilemma.

An individually costly act that benefits all group members is a public good. Natural selection favours individual contribution to public good [corrected] only when some benefit to the individual offsets the cost of contribution. Problems of sex ratio, parasite virulence, microbial metabolism, punishment of noncooperators, and nearly all aspects of sociality have been analysed as public goods sh...

Framing effects in public goods: Prospect Theory and experimental evidence

This paper studies, both theoretically and experimentally, frame effects in the context of a public good game in which players have to make a costly contribution either i) to achieve or ii) not to lose a non excludable monetary prize. Our protocol leads to public good provision (not deterioration) only if a certain contribution level is achieved. Since both frames differ with respect to the ref...

Solutions to the Public Goods Dilemma in Bacterial Biofilms

Bacteria frequently live in densely populated surface-bound communities, termed biofilms [1-4]. Biofilm-dwelling cells rely on secretion of extracellular substances to construct their communities and to capture nutrients from the environment [5]. Some secreted factors behave as cooperative public goods: they can be exploited by nonproducing cells [6-11]. The means by which public-good-producing...
